Choosing a base

Three bases beat seven hotels

Ljubljana works as an arrival and departure base: the airport is 26 km away and the old town is compact enough to enjoy in two evenings. The Bohinj–Bled basin is the right choice for lakes, gorges and day hikes, with Bohinj noticeably cheaper and quieter than Bled. Bovec or Kobarid covers the Soča Valley and its water sports, and Piran gives you a final coastal night before flying home from Trieste, Venice or back via Ljubljana.

Avoid the temptation to sleep in seven places in seven nights. Slovenia's roads are excellent, but the pleasure of the country is in its unhurried mornings — early light on Bohinj, an empty gorge boardwalk, a bakery opening at seven in Kobarid.
