The 4-Day Alpine Loop

260 kilometres, two overnight bases and the best of the Julian Alps — designed for a long weekend that does not feel like one.

Duration
4 days / 3 nights
Total driving
260 km
Bases
Bled (1) · Bohinj (2)
Season
June–October
Fitness
Moderate walking

This is the loop we recommend to anyone with four days and a hire car. It keeps driving short, puts you in two comfortable bases rather than four, and includes one genuinely unforgettable mountain road. It assumes arrival at Ljubljana airport on the morning of Day 1 and departure on the evening of Day 4.

Day 1 — 55 km

Ljubljana airport to Lake Bled

45 min drivingOvernight: Bled

Collect the car at LJU and drive north — the airport is closer to Bled than it is to the capital, so there is no need to detour into the city if your flight lands late. Check in, then walk the 6 km shoreline circuit anti-clockwise in the afternoon light.

Late afternoon: the 20-minute path up to Bled Castle for the terrace view and the museum. Dinner in Mlino or Zasip rather than on the promenade, where prices climb sharply. If you have energy left, climb Ojstrica for sunset — 20 minutes from the road, head torch for the descent.

Practical: buy the annual or weekly e-vignette at the airport fuel station before joining the A2. Parking at Bled is paid; check whether your accommodation includes a space.

Day 2 — 40 km

Vintgar Gorge, Pokljuka and on to Bohinj

1 h drivingOvernight: Bohinj

Start at Vintgar Gorge at opening time — book the slot in advance for July and August. The boardwalk takes about 90 minutes end to end including the Šum waterfall. Return to Bled for a late breakfast and, if you did not do it yesterday, the pletna boat to the island.

Early afternoon, drive up to the Pokljuka plateau (30 minutes, 1,300 m) for the Pokljuka Gorge circuit or the easy walk out to the shepherd huts at Planina Zajamniki. The spruce forest up here smells extraordinary after rain.

Descend to Bohinj for the next two nights. Swim before dinner if the weather holds — the lake is at its warmest around 17:00.

Day 3 — 25 km

Vogel, Savica and the Voje Valley

Under 1 h drivingOvernight: Bohinj

Take the first cable car up Vogel (check the webcam — if the summit is in cloud, swap this with the afternoon plan). From the top station, walk to Orlove glave in 30 minutes for the aerial view of the whole lake, or continue toward Šija for a three-hour ridge circuit.

Back down for lunch, then the short steep climb to Savica Waterfall — 553 steps, 20 minutes, worth it for the double cascade. Finish with the Mostnica Gorge walk from Stara Fužina, which is at its best in late afternoon light when the sculpted limestone glows.

Dinner in Srednja vas or Stara Fužina: this is the place for mountain dairy food — Tolminc cheese, sour milk, buckwheat žganci, local trout.

Day 4 — 140 km

Kranjska Gora, Vršič Pass and back to Ljubljana

3 h drivingReturn: LJU

Leave Bohinj early. Drive via Bled and Jesenice to Kranjska Gora (about 1 h 15), stopping at Lake Jasna on the edge of town — a pair of artificial lakes with an ibex statue and a clean reflection of the Razor massif.

Then the Vršič Pass: 24 hairpins up the northern side, the Russian Chapel at bend 8, the summit at 1,611 m with parking and a hut, then 26 bends down into Trenta. Allow two hours for the crossing with stops. At the bottom, walk the 15 minutes to the Source of the Soča.

From Trenta, return via Bovec, Tolmin and Idrija to Ljubljana — around 2 h 15 — or reverse over the pass if you prefer the familiar. Drop the car and fly out, or add a night in the capital.

If Vršič is closed: substitute the Radovna valley and the Vrata approach to Peričnik Waterfall, then return to Ljubljana via the A2. You lose the high pass but gain the finest view of Triglav's north face in the country.

What this route deliberately leaves out

No Soča Valley overnight, no coast, no caves. Four days is not enough to add them without turning the trip into a driving exercise. If you have a week, use the Alps to Adriatic route instead. If you want the river rather than the lakes, take the Emerald River route.

Budget estimate

For two people sharing, excluding flights: hire car and fuel €180–€260 for four days, accommodation €300–€480 for three nights in mid-season, attractions and cable cars around €130 for two, food €50–€90 per day. Total roughly €800–€1,100 for the pair.

Pros and cons

Is this the right route for you?

Strong points

  • Only two accommodation changes in four days
  • Maximum scenery per kilometre driven
  • Works from a Friday evening to Monday evening
  • Mix of easy walks, one cable car and one great drive

Limitations

  • Vršič is closed roughly November to April
  • No coastal or karst content at all
  • Day 4 is a long driving day by Slovenian standards
  • Difficult without a car outside July and August

Have a full week instead?

The seven-day route adds the Soča Valley, the Karst and the Adriatic coast.
